* my thoughts......on education nowadays

ok this post is not going to tok about my own happenings..instead i have some thoughts of this world. I think this would be a very boring one. xD

Have you ever wonder now the education system is so different from our time? I can still remember the happy times i have spent during my school days. Back then it was totally carefree. Last time we dun have compulsory ECA (now is CCA) which is to me very good. cos im the quiet type of person, i prefer to go home do my stuff, sleep or go out to play. haha. That time, when its holidays it really is holiday time. nothing to do, slack at home. nice. =D

My mum never really pressure me to work hard for exams lah, tests lah etc. she let me OTOT. and unexpectedly, my results din suffer much. Instead, when she sent me for tuition, my grades suffer. HAHAHA. ironic right? So my mum stopped sending me for tuition then my grades gone up instead. LOL!

I can still remember me and my gang of frens went to the arcade centre to play after our prelims leh. LOL. Maths prelim to be exact, so stressed that time so we all went there to de stress. i can still remember we played daytona. tsktsk`

Thinking back, i consider myself a good boi. lol. if you have seen my photos back then, im a typical nerd. =P big big glasses, the stupid face. HAHA. Those were the days..=)

Now back to the present, all has been changed so drastically for the past 10 years. From the current state now, i felt that schools are no longer a place for providing education for the next generations. In fact its being operated more and more like a commercialised organisation. Everywhere in singapore, you can see posters being put up outside of the schools bragging about their achievements, their passes, their top scholars etc. What for they want to become so high profile? Schools are places where children would go for education automatically. so why need to put up all those stuffs leh? Its so very fake imo. Now schools even have open house days for parents and potential students to visit. What for lah?.

I watched the news yesterday. Now its the period of pri 1 registration. Theres one segment which it states if a parent do voluntary work in the school for at least dunno how many hours, the chances of their child getting into the school would be higher. WTH lah. Whats wrong with our current education system now? Parents need to do voluntary work in school then their child can get in. what bullshit is that? It sounds so fake. Arent education should be made easy and compulsory for all our children? What sort of logic is that? Does that mean that if a parent dun do voluntary work in school, his child would be deprieved of education? This is absurd.

Even the operations within the school is also so "commercial" like. Gone were the days where in the general office theres only the P, VPs and clerks..now other than Ps and VPs and clerks, we also have admin managers, operations managers etc. No doubt its good to have them organise the school more better, but sometimes its not as good as it looks like.

Maybe its because all of us are getting more and more educated, the expectations of the schools are higher. Its also adds stress to the children now. All parents wanted their sons and daughters to excel in school, keep bombarding them with assesment books, tuition classes, enrichment courses etc. Holidays are supposed to have time to relax yet they have to go tuition classes everyday without fail. School gave them holiday homework and projects to do etc somemore need to attend CCA activities. In the end they only left like less than a week to enjoy themselves. Like that might as well dun go for school holidays, its no different from normal school days. Their schoolbags are so heavy that even i as an adult also feel heavy. somemore for a small body of them. Dont they ever spare a thought of how the child would think? This basically deprieves their rights to have a memorable childhood. They were once children before how come they cant think of that leh? I actually pity the children now. In front of me theres a real life example. My students in the school got tons of homework to do in their holidays so minus off their one week odd of holidaying outside singapore, basically they need to homeworking and doing projects in the rest of the holiday period. Sigh.

Children these days are getting more and more pampered too. Even the smallest things are being spoon fed to them. Got maids to serve them and its like they want wind they will have it. Parents wont resort to corporal punishment to their children as they scared they will become rebellious when they grow up. But I am one of them who also received corporal punishment from my parents, especially my mum.

My mum would scold me whenever i do wrong, made me kneel on plastic casings infront of my house's god altar to repent what i have done wrong. She also made me do squats while pulling my ears for dunno how many hundred times. I was also being canned too. My friends of my age also more or less have such experiences too. But i never blamed my mum, cos i really did wrong and i deserved to be punished. But you see kids these days, even the parents also scared of them. I think i would entrust my future children to let my mum take care of them.

Another point which im very uncomfortable is the inability of the present generation not able to speak chinese fluently. My thinking is since we are chinese, we should at least be able to speak chinese. I can tolerate people who dun really know how to write chinese characters but to speak also dunno? what is that lah. Yesterday night the principal of dunno which school was interviewed. her chinese standard is really CnMI lah. Can sense the english slang when she tok to the press the time. That is why i took a personal liking to those who could write and read chinese fluently.

ok enough rantings. OFF!
